The pile of a fibre pile fabric is treated by a fluid as it is incorporated in the base fabric whilst producing the fabric on a machine. In example a nozzle 22 is positioned adjacent and immediately after each feeding station of a high pile knitting machine having apparatus for feeding fibres to the needles to be incorporated in the knitted fabric. After having knitted in the fibres an air tube directs air against the fabric to straighten out the fibres whereafter the fibre pile and fabric move past the nozzle 22 through which a fluid passes to affect the fibre. To this end a dye may colour the root of the fibres or be directed against the mid patton or portions of the length of the fibres. By using a wide nozzle all except the tip of the fibres may be treated. Alternatively by a valve control mechanism groups of fibres along the course may be treated interspersed with untreated groups. The treatment may include effects other than dying such as a chemical treatment or a fluid heat treatment or a combination of treatments.
