Abstract

1,223,140. Pipe couplings. SHIPOWNERS REFRIGERATED CARGO RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 8 Oct., 1969 [21 Oct., 1968], No. 49875/68. Heading F2G. A coupling for connecting a pipe to an aperture in a container, e.g. to connect a source of chilled air to a refrigerated transport container, comprises a sleeve formed of strands of resiliently deformable material mounted on the pipe end so that the container aperture can be located within the sleeve end with the strands engaging the container wall. In one form of coupling, strands 9, 13, Fig. 1, of nylon and bristle are arranged in two layers to form the sleeve. Each layer is held in a crimp ring 15, the two layers 9, 13 being separated by an impervious layer 11 of rubber, plastics, &c. The crimp rings 15, &c. are secured in a ring-shaped housing 17 mounted on the end of a pipe (3), Fig. 2 (not shown). A number of such pipes, &c. (3) may be arranged at discretely spaced coupling stations, e.g. in the hold of a ship, to align with correspondingly spaced apertures (5) in the side walls (7) of transport containers. Lowering such containers into the hold of the ship then automatically effects coupling. In another form of the coupling, the sleeve of bristles 59, &c., Figs. 3, 4, is secured to a support ring 49 mounted by spindles 47, pivoted links 43 and pin-and-slot connections 37 on a flange 29 fast with a pipe 21. The support ring 49 is biased away from the flange 29 by springs (71), Fig. 5 (not shown). The links 43, &c. allow limited vertical movement of the support ring 49. Springs 83 centre lugs 51 of the support ring 49 on the spindles 47 between the links 43, and allow limited lateral movement. A flexible connection 63 between the support ring 49 and the pipe 21 consists of foamed plastics 69 and outer impervious layers 65, 67. A number of such couplings is arranged so that the springs (71) bias the bristles, &c. 59 inwards to positions which lie just within the area below the bottom of a suspended transport container 23. As the container is lowered, its side walls 25 engage cam rollers 53 on the spindles 47, and the support rings 49 are forced back towards their flanges 29 against spring bias. The container 23 continues to be lowered until apertures in its sides 25 align with the sleeves 59, to complete the couplings.
