A pneumatically operated percussion device for driving fasteners, e.g. nails, or staples, comprises a valve 13 which, when actuated by depression of a pin 14, starts the percussive action, and means whereby the pin can be actuated by depression of trigger 16 only when the nose of the device is contacting a workpiece and when a nail is present in feed duct 7. The means comprises a rod 19 which has a workpiece sensing member 17, and which supports at its upper end a lever 15, and a rocker 24 spring-urged to the position shown in Fig. 1. The rocker ineludes a pin 26 which co-operates with a shoulder 31 on the rod 19 to lock the rod, and a projection 29 which is contacted when a nail is present in the duct. A nail introduced via pipe 9 will cause the rocker to pivot clockwise and the pin 26 will be disengaged from the shoulder 31 so that when the device is placed against a workpiece the rod 19 will be displaced upwardly, and cam surface 27 will engage pin 26 to cause further pivoting of the rocker in order that a safety stop 23 may be removed from the path of the nail. In order that the head of the nail may pass through restricted part of the duct 7, a part 33 is pivotally mounted at 34 and is urged by spring 35 to its normal position. A stop device 40 prevents excessive movement of the part 33 during driving of the nail. In an alternative embodiment a pivoted member (124) (Fig. 8, not shown) is of U-shape section, one limb of the U extending into the feed duct (107) and the other limb providing a projection engageable with a step on a rod (119) to lock the rod in an inoperative position, the rod when released permitting actuation of a control valve. In this embodiment nails are supplied to the feed duct from a magazine.
