Abstract

122,301. Neighbour, A. G. L., and Neighbour, H. C. W. Feb. 20, 1918. Actuating pumps by motion of vehicles and by hand power; controlling compression.-A pump for inflating a tyre of a motor-vehicle is fixed to the wheel to rotate therewith and its operating- shaft is either held stationary by one end of an adjustable radius-rod which is secured at its other end to a fixed part of the vehicle, or is rotated through planetary gearing from a toothed wheel held stationary by an attached radius-rod; when the radius-rod is removed, the pump may be operated by a handle secured in its place. In one form, the cylinder 5, Fig. 2, of a double-acting pump is disposed diametrically and symmetrically across the hub 2 of the wheel and has end covers 6 and a cylindrical boss 7 projecting outwards coaxial to the hub. The boss 7 contains a bearing 8, Fig. 8, for a crank-shaft 9 with a squared outer end 29 for the attachment -of the radius-rod or handle and a crank-pin 11 engaging a block 10 adapted to slide in a transverse slot 12 in the piston 13. Spring-controlled inlet and delivery valves are provided in the ends and sides respectively of the cylinder, the delivery valves communicating through a passage 16 and outlet 17 with a pipe 18 connected to the tyre valve 19. The cylinder has a flange 3 secured to an adapter 4 which is screwed into the hub 2 in place of the usual cap, and nuts on clamping-screws 69 are passed through enlargements of curved slots in the adapter and tightened when the pump has been moved to one side to make the screws enter the slots. Alternatively, the cylinder may be provided with a cylindrical boss adapted to screw into the hub. The outer end of the radius-rod has an eye 25 which is engaged by a hook 39 on a bracket secured to the mudguard 21, the footboard 22, or other part of the vehicle. The outer part 23 is tubular to receive telescopically an intermediate part with a forked end 26 to which is pivoted an inner part 27 having a boss 33 with a square hole to receive the end of the crank-shaft 9. A spring-controlled plunger with a head 36 is disposed in an extension of the boss 33 and engages a hole in the crank-shaft to lock the radiusrod in position. A similar locking-device may be used to secure a handle to the crank-shaft when required. A controlling-device 41 is interposed between the ends of the pipe 18 to cause the pump to deliver to the atmosphere when the predetermined pressure in the tyre is reached. The two sections of the pipe 18 are connected to communicating branches 56, 57, Fig. 4, of a tee-piece 55 containing a bonnet guide 60 for a spring-controlled ball valve 59 which normally closes ports 62 leading to the atmosphere. The piece 55 is screwed on to a sleeve 42 which is passed through the rim of the wheel and is secured by a wing-nut 45. A hollow flexible head 47 is secured by a nut and a collar 46 to the sleeve and is acted upon by the inner tube 64 of the tyre to move a plunger 50 within the sleeve 42 against the action of an adjustable spring 54, so that, when the predetermined pressure is reached, the pointed end 65 of the plunger moves the ball-valve 59 from its seat. A relief valve 67 set to act at. a higher pressure than that operating the valve 59 is provided on the bonnet 60. The lower end of the plunger stem 52 may be marked to serve as a pressure indicator when the piece 55 is removed. In a modified form, the pump is secured to the hub flange and is operated by a toothed wheel in gear with another toothed wheel mounted in ball-bearings co-axial with the hub and held stationary by the radius-rod; a second pump similarly actuated may be arranged to balance the first.
