Abstract

1,223,015. 2-Methyl-4-vinyloxymethyl-1,3- dioxolan polymers. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 25 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 19767/68. Heading C3P. 2 - methyl - 4 - (vinyloxymethyl) - 1,3 - dioxolan is homo- or copolymerized using a cationic catalyst and in an inert solvent. The polymer may be cross-linked by inclusion of a divinyl monomer such as divinyl ether in the polymerization. The polymers may be hydrolysed to form products of the formula The above products may be reacted with a dicarboxylic acid or diisocyanate to form threedimensional polyesters or polyurethanes or with a polyunsaturated acid to form diester groupings on each unit. In examples, 2-methyl- 4 - vinyloxymethyl - 1,3 - dioxolane is homo- or copolymerued with maleic anhydride in the presence of BF 3 .(C 2 H 5 ) 2 O or benzoylperoxide and the products hydrolysed with aqueous ammonia and reacted with a tall oil unsaturated acid mixture containing oleic, linoleic and cis - 5,9,12 - octadecatrionoic acids.
