Abstract

1,222,948. Fluid pressure operated brakes; brake failure indicators. ERNST HEINKEL A.G. 25 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 15466/69. Headings F2E and F2F. A double circuit master cylinder for braking systems of automotive vehicles comprises two pistons 6, 7 actuated directly by a brake pedal 5 to vary the volumes of their respective working chambers 2, 3. The chambers 2, 3 communicate with opposite ends of a compensating piston 24 which works in a cylinder, the compensating piston being preferably spring loaded to a central position in the cylinder. A spring loaded, preferably manually retractable pin 34 works in a groove 35 in the piston 24 and enters one or two hollows 36 formed at the ends of the groove should one of the hydraulic circuits fail to lock the piston in an end position. The piston 24 may also be provided with a further groove having tapered end portions, a switch actuating pin riding in the groove and actuating the switch on an unbalance occurring in the circuits (Fig. 2, not shown). The switch may trigger off a visible or audible warning. The pin 34 may be reset after an hydraulic circuit has been repaired by a magnetic or electric resetting device.
