[Also in Division E2] A railway flat car 10 which is adapted to support containers C having substantially rectangular bases of various lengths thereon comprises a substantially flat deck 12 which has pairs of slots 24 adjacent each side of the deck 12 and extending longitudinally of the car 10 adjacent pairs of slots 24 being aligned longitudinally of the car 10 and there being an endwise spacing between each pair of slots while container supports 34, Fig. 5, are slidably mounted at spaced intervals in the slots 24A, 24B, 24C by means of projections 62, 66 on guide lugs 61, 64 respectively and tabs 60 on locking lugs 58, Fig. 9, the members 60, 62, 66 engaging via reinforcing strips 56 opposed spaced flanges 30 which define a slot 32 therebetween and adjacent slots are interconnected by cut-out portions 68 which are greater in width than the slots 24, the container supports 34 being mounted so that they may pivot into an inoperable position in which they form closures for the portions 68 and thereby provide supporting surfaces for wheeled vehicles. The container supports 34 may be moved along the slots 24A, 24B, 24C during which movement they are guided by lugs 61 and 64. Each container support 34 comprises a base 36 which defines a horizontal container seat 38 having upwardly extending walls 40 and 41 which provide a pocket for supporting a comer of a container C. An opening 42 in the wall 40 has a slot 46 extending therefrom and receives a rotatable container locking pin 44 which projects into an opening O in the container C. The slot 46 receives a lug 48 secured to the pin 44 when the pin 44 is manually rotated by a handle 50. A projecting tab 52 on the extending end of the pin 44 prevents the removal of pin 44 from the container support 34 when the lug 48 is aligned with the slot 46 and the pin 44 is withdrawn from the opening O in the container C. Road vehicle trailers may be secured on the flat car 10 by means of trailer hitches 74, Fig. 13, on the deck 12.
