Abstract

1,222,869. Electromagnetic interrupters; vacuum switches. McGRAW-EDISON CO. 21 Nov., 1968 [10 April, 1968], No. 55352/68. Heading H1N. An automatic recloser has a vacuum contact unit 12 operated through a snap-action bellcrank lever mechanism 14 acted upon by a plunger 10 of an electromagnet which has its coil 8 in series with the contacts 54, 56 of the vacuum contact unit. On overload the plunger 10 is moved downward to move a link 80, pivoted at 82, so that a link 90, connected thereto, moves a spring 124 across the pivot axis 114 of a bell-crank lever 110 and a lever 128 snaps to the position (Fig. 4, not shown) in which its pin 130 strikes the other end of a slot 132 in the lever 110 which is moved to open the contacts. The coil is thus de-energized and the spring 24 shortens to drive the plunger 10 upward and so recrosses the pivot axis 114 and snaps the lever 128 to the top end of slot 132 and recloses the contacts. The vacuum contact unit has an arc shield 64 and electrostatic shield 62 and a spring-biased linkage 150, 152 provides compensation for the effect of pressure differential during operation. A lock-out mechanism 4, hydraulic timing means 6 and trip piston stem operate to allow for a set number of reclosures before final locking in the circuit interrupted position requiring manual resetting.
