Abstract

[Also in Division G6] Apparatus for the combustion of samples containing radioactive isotopes comprises a combustion chamber 18 having an exit 27 for combustion products, a receptacle 10 for material to be burnt, and combustion chamber side walls extending upwardly and inwardly above the receptacle to approximate the shape of the flame of the burning material, so as to minimize the volume of atmosphere round the flame. The receptacle 10 may be a basket made of Pt or Pt-Rh alloy which acts as a combustion catalyst and also as ignition means by passage of an electric current. For loading successive samples, the receptacle may be withdrawn from the combustion chamber by means of pneumatic cylinder and piston assembly 16. Oxygen is supplied through passages 25, 26 for combustion, followed by nitrogen to remove all the combustion products. To prevent condensation on the walls of the combustion chamber, a jacket 30 containing heated liquid is provided. When samples of plant or animal tissue containing 3H or <SP>14</SP>C are burnt, <SP>3</SP>H 2 O may be removed from the combustion products by condensation, and <SP>14</SP>CO 2 by cooling to low temperature or by reacting with ethanolamine.
