Abstract
1,222,566. Working stone. D. H. DAWSON. 1 Aug., 1969 [20 Aug., 1968], No. 39832/68. Heading B5E. A blade for a machine for splitting blocks of frangible material comprises a plurality of relatively movable portions 1, Fig. 1, a part of each of which portions forms a part of the edge 3 of the blade. The portions are disposed side by side and each portion is in the form of a chisel 1 having a shank 5 and head 7 which is slidable in a slot in a housing 13, the chisels being retained in the housing by plates 15. A flexible diaphragm 19 and cap 21 formed with a recess 23 are secured to the housing, the diaphragm and recess defining a chamber filled with an incompressible fluid. Two opposed assemblies as described above may form upper and lower cutters 27, 31, Fig. 3, in a machine for cutting a slab 35. The flexible diaphragm permits the chisels to move relative to one another to conform to the irregular surface of the slab before the full cutting pressure is applied. The chambers 23 may communicate by way of passages 48, 49, Fig. 4, at the ends of the housing to cylinders 47 so that pressure in the chambers when the chisels engage the slab move pistons 38 against the end faces of the chisels to lock them together. In another embodiment, the chamber contains a block of resilient material.
