Abstract

1,222,267. Rotary shaft seals. GENERAL MOTORS-HOLDEN'S PTY. Ltd. 28 Nov., 1968 [4 March, 1968], No. 56563/68. Heading F2B. In a sealing ring of elastomeric material for use between two relatively rotatable members, e.g. for vehicle wheel bearings, comprising a U-section body portion 2 providing radiallyspaced inner and outer walls 3, 4 interconnected by a web portion 7, one, 4, of the walls having flange means, e.g. a metal ring 8, for mounting the ring on one member and the other wall 3 having one or more laterally projecting sealing lips 12 for slidably engaging a surface of the other member, the lip-carrying wall 3 is sufficiently rigid so that in use any movement of the wall 3 due to angular misalignment of the other member is compensated by flexure of the web portion 7, the wall 3 thereby remaining in constant angular relationship with the lipengaged surface of that member. The metal ring 8 provides a locating flange 11 and a support flange 9 embedded in and bonded to the outer wall 4.
