Abstract

1,222,248. Containers for molten glass. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., and R. C. JEWELL. 28 Jan., 1969 [11 March, 1968], No. 11796/68. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions B1 and F4] A container for molten glass has inner glasscontacting surfaces formed from iridium or an alloy thereof containing at least 50% by weight of Ir, and has a coating of rhodium on its outer surfaces. The container is particularly useful for high-phosphate content glasses, which are corrosive to platinum containers. The iridium alloy may be an iridium/rhodium alloy (e.g. 50 wt. per cent of each), but the use of substantially pure iridium is preferred. The rhodium coating may be formed by, for example, electroplating to a thickness of 5Á, or by spraying to a thickness of 100-250 Á. A stirrer may be included in the container, which is formed of similar material to the container.
