Abstract

1,222,111. Uses of luminescence. E. A. SENA. 31 Jan., 1968 [1 Feb., 1967], No. 4884/68. Heading C4S. A scintillation counting composition comprises a primary scintillator and a surfactant which is thermodynamically stable and exhibits no chemiluminescence or phospherescence when a radio-active sample is added to the composition. The composition may comprise a micellar system including one or more surfactants and co-surfactants, primary and secondary scintillators and polar and non-polar scintillator solvents. Scintillators include PPO, p-terphenyl, diphenylhexatriene, d-NPO, d-NOPON and POPOP. Solvents include water, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, p-cymene and dioxane. Surfactants include fatty acids, fatty acid soaps, e.g. Na linoleate, linolic acid, stearic acid, oleates, stearates, laurates, ethers, esters, sulphonates, petronates, alkyl succinates and ethylene oxide-propylene oxide condensates. Other less useful surfactants include amines, sulphonic acids and ketones. Materials to be counted include CO 2 , hemoglobin treated with NaOH and Na 2 O 2 , aged urine containing precipitated protein, cellulosic materials, synthetic polymers, tissue, uranyl salts, tritium labelled water, toluene ascorbic acid and blood, C 14 labelled toluene, fructose and glycine brine, COCl 2 and n-alkane sulphonate. NaOH may be used to adjust the pH value of the composition.
