Abstract
1,221,993. Compressors; Hot gas engines. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N. V. Feb.2, 1968 [Feb.7, 1967], No.5392/68. Headings F1N and F1S. [Also in Division F2] A hot gas reciprocating engine or other machine for the compression or expansion of gases comprises a rolling sleeve-type seal 8 which is supported by liquid (oil) in a space 9 and made from a material (polyurethane) resistant to the action of the supporting liquid, means for supplying the liquid to and conducting the liquid from the space, means, such as a control device 13, for maintaining a constant pressure differential across the seal to keep it taut, and a separator 25 for removing from the supporting liquid the water and other contaminations harmful to the material of the seals. The control device consists of a diaphragm 15 open to the spaces 5, 9 above and below the seal 8 in the engine cylinder, the pressure in the space 9 being maintained lower than that in the space 5 by means of a spring 21 acting under the diaphragm. The supporting oil is pumped into the space 9 through the separator 25 which may be constituted by a molecular sieve or another water-binding agent such as activated aluminium oxide. In a second embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown), the control device 13 is replaced by a small hole (33) through the piston wall which co-operates with a further piston (30) sealed to the cylinder by a rolling sleeve-type seal (8), the pressure differential across the seal being maintained by springs (32) and the excess of supporting oil being released to the engine sump through the hole in the piston wall. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), two rolling seals are employed, to seal a piston (42) between a cylinder (41) and a displacer rod (45) in a hot gas engine.
