Abstract
1,221,956. Tension control in winding. P. DEFONTENAY. 27 Feb., 1968 ['15 March, 1967], No. 9330/68. Heading D1D [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] In apparatus for winding material into or off a spindle A, driven by a motor M 1 and having a torque control device PC which maintains the tension in the material at a predetermined value, the torque control member which normally acts as a brake and is driven by the motor about a rotatable axis against a braking torque is also capable of acting as a motor to augment the driving torque exerted on the spindle when driven in an opposite rotational sense by a power source PA. The motor M 1 , the spindle A 1 , and the member PC are connected to respective elements of a differential gean D. The power source Pa is driven by an auxiliary motor M 2 which is automatically brought into operation when motor M 1 does not supply sufficient power to maintain the desired tension T. The output of pump Pa exceeds the maximum input of pump PC when the latter acts as a motor so that some excess fluid passes through regulator valve RC which is adjustable for allowing the tension T to be varied. An arrangement for the automatic control of pump PC is shown in Figure 12. Pump PC rotates around shaft 2 by pinions 41 meshing with pinions 42 keyed to the shaft. The pump acts as a brake when the various parts rotate as shown by the arrows, fluid being pumped from reservoir 18 through ducts 43, 44 to chamber 6. Outlet pipe 20 of pump Pa also communicates through non-return valve A r with chamber 6. If spindle A 1 requires to be driven at high speed then shaft 2 will be driven only at low speed, and clockwise movement of body part 40 will nearly close a valve 3 with respect to seatings in a part 47. This causes switch 7 to be operated by member 51 to switch on motor M 2 to drive pump Pa which delivers fluid to chamber 6 and causes PC to act as a motor, shaft 2 rotating clockwise. As the requirements of spindle A 1 become less, more fluid from pump Pa emerges from pipe 46 and impinges on member 9 which actuates switch 10 to cut off motor M 2 and thus stop pump Pa.
