Abstract

1,221,934. Vehicles frames and suspensions. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 20 June, 1968 [22 June, 1967; 29 Jan., 1968], Nos. 29475/68 and 4579/68. Divided out of 1,221,933. Heading B7D. A vehicle chassis comprises a tubular frame of trapezoidal cross-section having independently suspended therefrom front steerable wheels 1, 2 and rear non-steerable wheels in tandem 3, 4, 5 and 6, each wheel suspension including unequal length upper and lower arms 13 and 15 pivoted to the frame and connected at their outer ends by ball joints 17, 18 to a king-pin assembly 19 mounting the wheel, there being a first link 20 extending inwardly from a trailing lever arm 21 on the assembly 19 and a second link 25 extending forwardly from the assembly to a flexible mounting 26 on the frame, said upper arm 13 operating an hydraulic displacer unit 30 in communication with accumulator springs 40. The units 30 are mounted in a rigid housing 32 pivoted to the frame at the same position as arm 13. The front units 30 are each connected to a pair of parallel springs 40, and the rear units 30 associated with wheels 3, 4 or 5, 6 connected to a parallel trio of springs 40. The rear hydraulic suspension may be connected together by lines 44, 46 with a valve 45 to open or close the fluid path depending on the roll resistance required. A pump 60 drawing fluid from a reservoir 62 may be used to raise or lower the rear end of the vehicle. The front links 20 are connected to a steering assembly 22. Hydraulic fluid from the units 30 enters a cavity in the springs 40 defined by metal cups 52 which are supported in rubber bodies 51 which deflect so that the influx of fluid is resiliently resisted.
