Abstract
1,221,811. Polyether filaments. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 26 April, 1968 [18 May, 1967], No. 19994/68. Heading B5B. Fibres of a polyphenylene ether which contains at least 100 units of the formula wherein Q is phenyl and Q<SP>1</SP> is phenyl, alkyl substituted phenyl, biphenyl, triphenyl or naphthyl, are stretched at 200-300‹ C. at a ratio of 5À0-10À0 and are thereafter restretched above 400‹ C. at a ratio of 1À0-5À0. Practical values are a restretching temperature of 400- 520‹ C. or a stretch ratio of 1À0-2À5. The stretching of poly(2,6-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene)ether which has been dry-spun or wet-spun into i.p.a. is exemplified. The product is insoluble in organic solvents and a fibre of the above polyether exhibiting trichloroethylene insolubility is claimed per se. The product also has increased I.V. and crystallinity.
