Abstract

1,221,696. Destructive hydrogenation of coal. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 23 May, 1968 [29 May, 1967], No. 24679/68. Heading C5E. A process for converting into liquid hydrocarbon products a solid, hydrogen-deficient, hydrocarbonaceous material containing combined oxygen comprises contacting said solid hydrocarbonaceous material in a hydrogendonor extraction zone with a hydrogen-donor solvent under conditions chosen to convert from 50 to 85 weight per cent of said solid hydrocarbonaceous material into liquid products and to remove from 70 to 90 weight percent of the oxygen content thereof, and thereafter contacting the unreacted solid hydrocarbonaceous material in a catalytic hydrogenation zone with gaseous molecular hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst under conditions chosen to obtain an overall conversion of 95 to 99 weight per cent of the solid hydrocarbonaceous material into liquid products and to remove substantially all of the combined oxygen remaining therein. The solvent may be tetralin, partially hydrogenated anthracene or a liquid aromatic product boiling in the range of 400‹ to 950‹ F. The catalyst in the second stage may be cobalt molybdate or a sulphided cobalt molybdate supported on alumina. The effluent from the second stage may be fractionated and a portion recycled. The feedstock may be lignite, brown coal, or sub-bituminous or bituminous coal.
