Abstract

1,221,321. Making gears; welding by pressure and fusion. DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 Jan., 1969 [10 Jan., 1968; 17 Aug., 1968], Nos. 1364/68 and 39460/68. Headings B3A and B3R. A method of producing worms for worm gearing comprising forming a helically threaded cylinder member surface hardening the cylinder member, and securing a shaft member to each end of the cylinder member by a welding process resulting in a restricted zone of high temperature. The cylinder member is helically threaded by rolling, milling or hobbing and is surface hardened by induction heating case hardening or flame hardening. The hardened zone of the bar alternate with narrow unhardend zones. Each hardened zone corresponds to the toothed portion of a finhed wisrand them o hardened zones are separated from one another by parting off through the unhardened zones. The restricted temperature zone welding process employed is either friction welding or electron beam welding. In one embodiment each shaft member is located relative to the cylinder member prior to welding by a projection formed on the end of one of the members which fits in a recess formed in the adjacent end of the other of said members.
