Abstract

1,221,307. Block polymer sealant compositions. POLYCELL MFG. CO. Ltd. 16 Oct., 1968 [31 Oct., 1967], No. 49468/67. Heading C3P. Sealant compositions comprise (a) a styrene butadiene or styrene/isoprene block copolymer, (b) a modifying resin which is a tackifying or reinforcing resin and is compatible with the thermoplastic rubber component (a), (c) a coupling agent which is compatible with components (a) and (b) and is capable of improving bond strength between glass fibres and plastics material in which the fibres are embedded, and (d) a solvent for components (a) and (b). The amounts of the constituents are (a) 20 to 50%, (b) 2 to 30%, (c) 0À1 to 10% and (d) 40 to 70%. Optionally, pigments, fillers, antioxidants and antiozonants may be included. Suitable components (b) include rosin, rosin esters, terpene resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin or coumaroneindene resin, and (c) include reactive silane or silicones, certain organo-zirconium compounds and methacrylic acid-chromium chloride Werner complexes. In the examples, tile joints are sealed with a composition comprising either of the polymers (a), a commercial alkyl-aromatic hydrocarbon resin (a coumarone-indene resin), vinyl - tris - (2 - methoxy - ethoxy) silane, xylene, a substituted phenol antioxidant, and a surface treated or an untreated titanium dioxide as pigment filler.
