[Also in Divisions C4 and G5] A surface carries a continuous or interrupted layer of a phototropic ink, which changes colour when it is exposed to light, so that when the surface is uncovered and viewed the ink shows one colour initially and another later. Either the first or second colour may match a non-phototropic background, so that either printed intelligence is invisible initially and becomes visible during viewing or is visible initially and fades. Several phototropic inks, requiring different periods of time to accomplish their colour changes, may be used together so that images appear in succession. When the surface is covered again the phototropic ink reverts to its original colour. Inks usable may incorporate SrS, with trace amounts of Mn and Bi carbonate, or alternatively BaTiO 3 with Fe<SP>111</SP> or CaCO 3 with Mn, Bi and S. In each case the materials are fired, at temperatures between 900‹ and 1100‹ C., then are dispersed in a carrier which may itself be an ink.
