Abstract

1,221,005. Vehicle spring suspensions. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 2 Oct., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 54377/68. Heading B7D. In a vehicle beam axle suspension system, a U-shaped suspension member 10 is disposed with its arms 12, 14 directed rearwardly and is pivotally connected, in the central region of its base 16, to a vehicle body portion, the member 10 supporting an axle 22 and having a transverse leaf spring 44 flexibly supported by the ends of its arms, the vehicle body portion being mounted on the leaf spring by means of a pair of spaced mounts 50, 52. The pivotal connection 18 of the member 10 to the vehicle body comprises brackets 68, 70 fixed to the member 10 and pivoted to a transverse rod (62) (Fig. 2, not shown), which is flexibly supported by brackets 20 on the body portion. The rod (62) may pass beneath the vehicle propeller shaft 38, being appropriately bent centrally for this purpose. The member 10 may additionally be connected to a differential housing, and also the vehicle body by means of Panhard rod 58. The latter may, alternatively, be connected to the axle and body. Vibration dampers 74, 76 may be provided between the body and the axle or, as shown, the ends 40, 42 of the arms of member 10. These ends 40, 42 may be splayed outwardly to enhance roll-resistance of leaf spring 44. Some, or all, of the suspension-to-body connections may comprise elastomeric members. Specifically, the pivotal connection 18 comprises elastomeric bushes (64, 66), the ends of the leaf spring are supported by elastomeric blocks 46, 48, and the mounts 50, 52 comprise elastomeric pads.
