Piperidine derivatives of the Formula I wherein R 1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon or phenyl group and R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic hydrocarbon, phenyl or γ-aminopropyl group, are produced by catalytically hydrogenating ketones of the formulµ wherein R 3 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic hydrocarbon or phenyl group, (a) in the presence of ammonia and then hydrogenating the products in the absence of ammonia, or (b) when the starting materials are the dicyano compounds, in the absence of ammonia.
