Abstract
1,220,800. Electronic musical instruments. WURLITZER CO. 17 Oct., 1969 [15 Nov., 1968], No. 51178/69. Heading G5J. An electronic musical instrument includes a pulsato signal generator and a circuit such that on operation of a switch the pulsato signal is introduced at a rate dependent on a time constant of the circuit to modulate the sound. In an electronic organ (12) glissando and vibrato effects are produced by operation of a switch 22 on the swell pedal (20) by the toe of the organist (Fig. 1, not shown). To produce vibrato, the ON/OFF switch 110 is switched on i.e. the opposite position to that shown. The instrumental vibrato switch 122 is also switched on, opposite to the position shown. A low frequency oscillation produced by an oscillator 36 is passed through a buffer amplifier stage 72. During steady state operation the capacitor 82 is charged from the voltage rail 44, junction 84 being at negative potential, thus cutting off the diode 86. The oscillations pass through the capacitor 88 and resistor 92 to the tone generator vibrato bus 100, producing the vibrato effect. The depth switch 109 controls the amount of oscillation applied to the bus 100, being minimum in the position shown, and maximum in the opposite position. On operation of the toe switch 22 the bus-bar 100 is shorted to earth through contact 146, inhibiting the vibrato. At the same time the junction 84 is brought near earth potential through the ganged contact 142. This brings the diode 86 into its conducting state, thus shorting the oscillations to earth. On releasing the switch 22, as capacitor 82 charges up, the vibrato effect is gradually reinstated, the rate depending on the time constant of the capacitor 82 and diode 86. To produce glissando the instrumental vibrato switch 122 is switched to the position shown. On closing the normally open toe switch 22 the tone generator slide bus 134 is connected to earth through resistor 140, thus de-tuning the generators by a semitone. At the same time the contact 146 closes shorting the tone generator vibrato bus to earth. On releasing the switch the tone generators drift back to their natural frequencies producing the glissando effect.
