Abstract

1,220,595. Evaporators, film and vapour-compression types; desalination of water. COURTAULDS Ltd. 17 June, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 27907/67. Heading B1B. Liquid-to-be-evaporated is sprayed from nozzles 12 into a chamber 10 disposed above the upper header 3 of a bundle of internallyheated, vertical tubes 2, and the liquid collects on a catchment plate 8 which is divided into equal catchment areas each of which is connected to a tube 2 in such a manner that the liquid flows from each catchment area to its associated tube and forms a film on the outer surface thereof. The upper header 3 is penetrated by vertical pipes 13 which connect chamber 10 with shell space 7. The upper hexagonal end portions 14 of pipes 13 fit together to constitute catchment plate 8, and the portions 14 themselves constitute equal catchment areas. The lower hexagonal end portions 15 of pipes 13 fit together to constitute tube plate 9. Each pipe 13 is connected to a tube 2 by a connector 20 . Liquid flows through channels (not shown) between the connector and the inner wall of the end portion 15, and then flows over the top of thimble 23 to the outer surface of associated tube 2. The evaporator shown in Fig. 1 is of the vapour-compression type, and may be used for the desalination of brine. The steam evolved from the falling films of brine is drawn from shell space 7 into fan 6, and the compressed steam flows from header 4 upwardly into tubes 2 from which condensate, i.e. desalinated water, is withdrawn through outlet 34. The upper end of each tube 2 is connected via a nozzle 22 in connector 20, and by a flexible plastic tube 31 to a nozzle 30 in the upper end of an adjacent tube 13; and non-condensable gases are withdrawn from header 3 via outlet 33, which is connected to a vacuum pump. Residual brine is withdrawn from shell 7 through outlet 35. Tubes 2 may be made of polyethylene and the apparatus is operated so that the boiling point of the brine is about 30‹C. The pipes and the connectors may be made of polyvinyl chloride.
