Novel compounds I (in which X is -OCR 2 (R 3 )(R 4 ) or -NR 5 (R 6 ); R 1 is H or acyl; R 2 is H, alkyl or alkoxy; R 3 is H, hydroxyalkyl or alkoxycarbonyl; R 4 is alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, acyloxy, OH or cyclic imido; R 3 and R 4 may form together with adjacent C a heterocyclic ring; R 5 is H or alkyl; R 6 is acyl or carboxyalkyl; R 7 is H, halo, NO 2 , alkyl, alkoxy or amino; and any alkyl or alkoxy radicals have 1-6C with the provisos that (1) if R<SP>4</SP> is OH or hydroxyalkyl and R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are H then R<SP>7</SP> is H, halo, alkyl or alkoxy; and (2) if R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are H and R<SP>4</SP> is acetoxy then R<SP>1</SP> is acyl) are prepared by reacting (1) the acid with hal- CR<SP>2</SP>(R<SP>3</SP>)(R<SP>4</SP>) or (2) the appropriate acid halide with HNR 5 (R 6 *) (R 6 * is benzyloxycarbonyl alkyl or other blocking group) followed by hydrogenation to give I where R 6 is carboxyalkyl or (3) the acid with R<SP>5</SP>-N=C(R<SP>8</SP>)hal (R<SP>8</SP> is alkyl or aryl) to give I where R 6 is acyl. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound I together with a suitable carrier, and can be administered orally or parenterally as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-bacterial agents.
