Dividing - engines - Relates to means for traversing a mandrel for screw - -cutting, dividing straight lines, &c., which means may also be used to move the tool with regard to a fixed mandrel or workholder. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show the apparatus as arranged to traverse a mandrel which may carry a blank on which a screw is to be cut, a scale to be divided, &c. The tool employed may be an ordinary cutting-tool, a milling-cutter, or grinding-disk. The mandrel A is mounted in bearings B<1>, B<2>, and may be rotated in any ordinary way and carries any ordinary work-holder. The casing B is bored at right-angles to the axis of the mandrel, and in the cylindrical opening thus formed is mounted a plug-like fitting made in two parts C<7>, C<7a>, connected by bolts M, M'. The part C<7> is bored for the passage of the mandrel and carries a plug H in which is mounted a spindle E which carries, on a ball-bearing, a roller G. In the part C<7a> is mounted a spindle D made in one with a roller D<1>. Endways movement of the spindle D is prevented by the means shown. Running in contact with the roller D<1> is a smaller roller F<1> mounted on a ball bearing on the spindle F. By means of a yoke J, a spring bar J<3>, and a screw J<4>, the rollers D', G are held in contact with the mandrel which may be driven through the rollers D<1>, F<1> and bevel gear from the pulley F<4>. By rotating the part C<7a> by means of a collar C<5> and the screws C, C<9>, the roller D<1> can be placed at an angle to give the required traverse to the mandrel A, the roller G being turned to a corresponding angle in the other direction by similar means.
