Abstract
1,220,287. Jet propulsion plant. MOTORENUND TURBINEN-UNION MUNCHEN G.m.b.H. July 26, 1968 [July 29, 1967], No.35914/68. Heading F1J. [Also in Division F3] A combined ram jet and rocket engine has a solid starting propellant 5 contained within a solid main propellant 6, atmospheric air flowing to the main propellant for ram jet operation after combustion of the starting propellant. The starting and main solid propellants 5, 6 are contained within an outer casing 1 having a centre body 3 at its upstream end supported by struts 2 to define an air intake 7. Prior to firing of the propellants, the air intake 7 is blocked at its downstream end by an auxiliary solid propellant 8. A further auxiliary propellant 13 is disposed downstream of a nozzle 11 at the end of the propellant 5, the nozzle 11 itself being formed of a propellant or ablative material so as to burn away during combustion and vary the flow area. The engine is started by igniting propellant 13 which ignites propellant 5 as it burns down and exposes an exit nozzle 12. As propellant 5 burns down it ignites propellant 8 which burns rapidly to form a passage 16 for atmospheric air F entering the intake 7. Propellant 5 ignites a layer of phosphorus 9 which raises the temperature of the main propellant 9 to ensure the initiation of its combustion with the ram air entering through the intake 7. By this time the auxiliary propellant 8 has burnt down to form the profile 17 so that the intake air follows the path S. Additional oxygen is supplied by a chemically fixed solid oxidant 10 stored in the main propellant 6. Further liquid oxidant can also be supplied through injectors 15, when required during air breathing operation, from tanks 14 within the casing 1.
