An annealing furnace for the selective annealing of ground-contact plates having one or more ridges includes hollow rails 3 coolable by passing coolant therethrough which extend along the direction of travel of plates 6, the rails 3 being arranged in an upwardly open channel 2 and being shaped so that downwardly projecting ridges 7 of groundcontact plates 6 are able to be received in recesses in said rails 3. The plates travel on wear strips 5, so that with this arrangement, distortion of the cooling rails is avoided. Rails 3 are mounted in channel 2 by means of flanges 4 and a plurality of channels 2 may be used in furnace hearth 1.
