[Also in Division C5] The novel compounds dodecyl glyceryl sulphoxide, 2-dodecyloxyethyl methyl sulphoxide, dodecyl acetonyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2- chloroethyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2 - hydroxyethyl sulphoxide, dodecyloxyethoxyethyl methyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2 - iodoethyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2 - methylmercaptoethyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2 - (2 - hydroxyethoxy)- ethyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2 - methoxyethyl sulphoxide, dodecyl 2 - ethoxyethyl sulphoxide and dodecyl 2 - allyloxyethyl sulphoxide are prepared by oxidizing the corresponding sulphide by reacting a haloethyl sulphoxide with a sodium mercaptide or alcoholate, or by replacing chlorine by iodine with NaI to obtain the above iodo compound. Dodecyl acetonyl sulphide (novel) is prepared from dodecyl mercaptan and acetone. Dodecyloxyethyl methyl sulphide and dodecyloxyethoxyethyl methyl sulphide prepared from sodium methyl mercaptide and the appropriate chloride are also said to be novel as is dodecyloxyethoxy-ethyl chloride. Phonylhydrazones are prepared from dodecyl acetonyl sulphide and sulphoxide and the semicarbazone and oxime from the sulphide.
