Abstract

1,219,013. Automatic temperature control. KLOCKNER-WERKE A.G. March 7, 1968 [March 8, 1967], No.11266/68. Heading G3R. Temperature detectors, insensitive to ambient temperature changes and responsive to the temperature of travelling rolled material at the entry and exit of a cooling zone are maintained in linear regions of their characteristics to control the rate of cooling and thus maintain a desired exit temperature. As shown, photo-electric cells 1 and 2, responsive to the temperature of rolled wire 8 at the entry and exit of a cooling zone, produce signals which are caused to have a linear relationship with temperature by a servo-operated potentiometer 3 which adjusts the range of operation of the photocells. These signals operate through a controller 4, thyristor unit 6, and a step by step motor 7, to adjust a valve in the coolant supply so that the wire temperature at the cooling zone exit is maintained at a desired value selected by a unit 5 the range of operation of which is also adjusted by servo unit 3. The supply of coolant may be maintained at its previous value in the intervals between runs to prevent large changes. To make the temperature measurement independent of wire diameter, guide ducts may transmit radiation from the wire to the photo-cells which may be of the silicon type. The photo-cells may be made independent of ambient temperature changes by reducing their temperature to a low value by Peltier elements which are cooled by compressed air.
