Abstract

1,219,002. Ammonium phosphate; ammonium phosphate sulphate; fertilizers. SINCATSOC. INDUSTRIALE CATANESE S.p.A. 5 April, 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 16595/68. Headings C1A and C1B. Wet process phosphoric acid is treated with a soluble alkali metal compound to precipitate fluosilicic acid, the solution separated, and then treated with ammonia (preferably gaseous), to give a pH of 6À9-7À2, and the insoluble diammonium phosphate separated from the mother liquor, and from the insoluble impurities. This latter separation may be effected by centrifuging, whilst the former may be by decanting. The alkali metal compound used may be the hydroxide. The treatment with ammonia is preferably carried out at 65- 70‹ C. under reduced pressure, e.g. at 160 mm. Hg. The mother liquor (containing mono- and di-ammonium phosphate) may be further treated with ammonia, to a pH of 6À9-8À0, and the mixture granulated and dried, giving pellets of diammonium phosphate. The mother liquor may also be combined with other compounds, e.g. NH 4 NO 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , KCl, K 2 SO 4 , inert material, which may be solids, liquids or as slurries, and the mixtures granulated and dried, to give fertilizers. Alternatively, the mother liquor may be treated, in the presence of recycled, used, mother liquor, with sulphuric acid and ammonia, to a pH 3À9- 4-5, precipitating ammonium phosphate sulphate from a mother liquor, which is recycled. The diammonium phosphate and ammonium phosphate sulphate may also be used in fertilizer compositions.
