In a shop or warehouse, objects that are not specially marked for automatic identification are automatically identified by passing them through a measuring zone in which various physical properties such as weight, shape, colour and magnetic and dielectric properties are measured and fed to a computer (to which data of all objects likely to require identification have been fed beforehand) in which they are converted into prices and/or serial numbers. The objects may then pass to a packing zone to which a customer only has access after actuating a totalizer key and paying the appropiate amount.
