In a sewing machine aligned bobbin assemblies 2 from a magazine M are carried by a carrier C and transferred by a transfer device T to a bobbin holder H, the transfer device also serving to remove the empty bobbin case from the holder H. Bobbin cases are urged by a spring 12 into the concave and a sensor element 10 detects the arrival of the bobbin case in the carrier. The carrier is moved by a piston and cylinder 4 and a shutter 16 prevents further bobbin cases from being being ejected out of the magazine. When the carrier C is adjacent the holder H a piston 23 moves the hook 8 to push the bobbin case into the holder. To remove a bobbin case from the holder. When the carrier is adjacent the magazine the hook 8 is first longitudinally moved by a solenoid. The hook is then moved towards the holder H by piston 23 and the hook longitudinally retracted the grip the empty bobbin case. The hook is then moved outwardly by the piston 23 and the empty case falls out through a hole in the baseplate of the machine. The hook stays in its retracted, outward position until the carrier again moves forward. Removal of the empty bobbin cases may be assisted by air jets from tubes 27, 28. (For Figure see next page)
