Abstract

1,218,243. Automatic brake adjusters. DEUTSCHE PERROT-BREMSE G.m.b.H. 21 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 8504/68. Heading F2E. In an automatic brake adjuster, an adjusting sleeve 3, 3<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 1) is adjustable unidirectionally by virtue of a freewheeling unit including a ratchet tooth system 5 and a spring means in the form of a wave washer 6 relative to a housing 1 to adjust a non-rotatable screw-threaded bolt 4, 4<SP>1</SP> which engages a brake shoe. A ring 7, which is rotatable relative to the adjusting sleeve, surrounds the latter and is coupled to the housing 1 by a pin 9 operating in an inclined slot 8 (Fig. 2) to allow any adjustment to be taken up and retained by the ratchet tooth system 5. Fig. 1 shows the adjuster in a wedge and roller actuator of an internal shoe-drum brake. A one-way acting ball freewheeling unit 10, illustrated in Fig. 3, may be provided to act as a unidirectional locking means. Figs. 6 and 7 show the arrangement of the adjuster in an actuator of a self-energizing internal shoe-drum brake such that two screw-threaded bolts 104, 104<SP>1</SP> are screwed into respective adjusting sleeves 103, 103<SP>1</SP> each of which is provided with a separate ring 107, 107<SP>1</SP>, each of the adjusting sleeves bearing upon each other in a powertransmitting manner and being resiliently centred in the housing, each of the pin and slot arrangements 109, 108a, 109<SP>1</SP>, 108<SP>1</SP>a having an inclined portion 108b and 108<SP>1</SP>b such that, when the pin 109, 109<SP>1</SP> enters the inclined slot portion 108b, 108<SP>1</SP>b, adjustment of the rings 107, 107<SP>1</SP> takes place, the adjusted position being retained by interengaging teeth 105, 105<SP>1</SP> on the abutting faces of the sleeves 103, 103<SP>1</SP> and the rings 107, 107<SP>1</SP> which are maintained in engagement by wave washers 106, 106<SP>1</SP>. The adjusting sleeves 103, 103<SP>1</SP> are secured against unintentional rotation relative to the screw-threaded bolts 104, 1041 by plastics plugs 112, 112<SP>1</SP> acting as locking means.
