Abstract

1,218,139. Oxidizing PVA filaments. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 13 Aug., 1968 [1 Sept., 1967], No. 38591/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C1] Water-insolubilized fibrous polyvinyl alcohol is oxidized with an O-containing compound of a transition metal, e.g. in solution at 85‹ C., for a time, e.g. 5-10 minutes, sufficient to convert it to an essentially thermoset non-fusible product. In examples PVA yarn is treated with Cr 2 O 3 (in solution in H 2 SO 4 or HNO 3 ), acid K 2 Cr 2 O 7 or the vapour of CrOCl 2 . The product may be carbonized (see Division C1).
