1,217,493. Producing sheet material. FRANCIS SHAW & CO. (MANCHESTER) Ltd. 14 Feb., 1968 [21 Feb., 1967], No. 8185/67. Heading B5A. In a process for the continuous production of sheets of polymeric material e.g., compounded synthetic or natural rubber, an extruder 10 feeds a continuous mass directly to the first nip of a roller and belt calendering machine 12 comprising a belt 19, a cylinder roller 13, a heated pressure roller 14, a drive roller 15, a tensioning roller 16 and, if desired, a second pressure roller 18. The rollers 14 and 18 are adjustable relative to the roller 13 adjacent which is located a bank of heaters 17. The calendered sheet 21 is fed either alternately to one of two reels or to successive reels on a rotatable spider. The extrudate may be cut into strips before the first nip of the callender. In a modification the entry nip is defined by two small rollers which are below the curing temperature.
