In a typewriter having a type-basket continuously rotating and having type-levers 2 operated by setting levers 3, the free end 3a of the setting levers 3 is formed with magnetizable or magnetized material for deflecting the levers from a normal track against a surface 8a into a second track against a surface 9a wherein the lever is cam actuated to give an impression stroke to the selected type-lever 2; the setting levers 3 being deflected by a plurality of electromagnets 11, 12, 13 which are operated in turn as the lever passes. The setting levers 3 are biased by springs 6 against the surface 8a and movement of the levers 3 caused by the operation of the electromagnets does not move the type-levers 2 because of the clearance a. It is the cam action in the second track which causes impression movement of the type-levers 3.
