Abstract

1,217,435. Expandable fasteners. C. C. WHITE. 8 Aug., 1969 [4 April. 1969], No. 39850/69. Heading F2H. A self-expanding shell for engagement with a roof bolt 28 in a mine roof opening 20 comprises a plurality of flexible segments 32 connected at their lower ends to a portion 26 for receiving the roof bolt 28 and provided at their upper ends with extensions 36 which, before expansion of the shell, are arranged to co-operate with a retaining member 40 which prevents outward flexing of the segments 32. As shown, the retaining member 40 is tubular and is provided with windows 44 through which are able to extend hooks 38 provided on the extensions 36, the hooks 38 so engaging the tubular member 40 that the segments 32 are prevented from expanding. As the shell is pushed into the mine roof opening 20, the retaining member 40 abuts the end wall of the opening and upon continued displacement of the shell in the opening the hooks 38 become freed from the member 40 whereby the segments expand radially outwardly due to their inherent resilience to assume a conical shape complementary to the portion 22 of the opening 20. The segments 32 are connected by reduced portions 30 to the bolt receiving portion 26 and only some of the segments need be provided with extensions 36 and hooks 38. Prior to use, a pin (46), (Fig. 1, not shown) may be employed to retain the member 40 and segments 32 together.
