Abstract
121,735. Chanard, A. Jan. 6, 1917, [Convention date]. Spray carburettors. - A spray carburettor is provided with a main nozzle c and supplementary nozzle h in the choke tube f, and with a by-pass nozzle j in a chamber k which delivers mixture through an orifice k' near the edge of the throttle i in its closed position. The outlets of the nozzles h, j are at the level B-B which the fuel attains in the float-chamber a when the float-valve closes the inlet passage b. This occurs when the engine is stopped or running slowly. The level A-A is that which the fuel assumes in the float chamber when the engine is running at normal speeds, and when the inlet of fuel through the passage b is equal to that discharged through the nozzle. At intermediate speeds, the fuel assumes a level between A-A and B-B. The rise of the level during stoppage or slow running provides a reserve of fuel which facilitates starting and accelerating. The nozzles h, j are fed through a passage g at the level A-A, or the nozzle j may be fed through a separate passage at the same level. To prevent an excessive flow of fuel through the main nozzle, and also a gravity flow therefrom before it comes into action when the level is above A-A, a braking effect on the fuel flow is produced by directing the nozzle downwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, the highest portion of the bend reaching the level B-B. The braking effect may also be obtained, as shown in Fig. 2, by enlarging the upper part of the nozzle and providing capillary passages l therein or, as in further modifications, by placing wicks or capillary tubes in the enlarged part or forming such part to produce opposed or annular sheet-like capillary passages.
