Abstract
1,217,350. Removing metal by fusion. STEIGERWALD STRAHLTECHNIK G.m.b.H. 10 June, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 27405/68. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions B4-B5, C7, F4 and H1] Apertures or recesses 2 formed in a workpiece 1 are treated by an energy beam, preferably an electron beam to release an auxiliary substance into the aperture; preferably the apertures are previously formed by the same beam. In Fig. 13 the work is provided with a backing 10 formed of or containing the auxiliary material which is released on bombardment by the electron beam 4. In one example, the work is an aluminium plate and the backing is polyurethane foam saturated with oxygen which is released to oxidize the walls of the apertures 2. In a further example, the backing layer is fibrous material saturated with methyl alcohol which cools and hardens the work which may be hardenable steel sheet.
