Abstract

A method of determining the consistency of a moving mass of dough or similar material comprises immersing a rotatable, bladed sensor 11 in the material, rotating the sensor and determining the consistency of the material as a function of the resistance to rotation of the sensor presented by the material by a measuring device 37 arranged to respond to the torque exerted on a shaft 23 of a differential drive 15 for the sensor, the measuring device being coupled to the shaft by a spring (33), Fig.2 (not shown), so as to have a reduced response to rapid fluctuations of the resistance, the sensor being shaped and positioned so that the rate of flow of the material has a negligible effect on the rotation of the sensor. A shaft 17 drives a cage carrying level gears 19, 20 which mesh with a level gear 21 to rotate a shaft 12. One end of the spring (33) is connected to the shaft 23 of a level gear 22 whilst the other end is connected to a member having an arm 35 which bears against an actuator 36 for the measuring device in the form of a transducer 37 comprising a resistive bridge strain gauge. The transducer is connected via a control unit 38 having a meter 39 to a strip chart recorder 40. The input circuit of the chart recorder includes a variable time constant to provide further damping of any rapid fluctuations of the resistance to rotation of the sensor. Various constructions of the blades of the sensor, which may be angled to prevent the flow of material impeding their rotation, are described. The torque applied to the shaft 23 due to the resistance to rotation of the sensor by the material may be measured pneumatically instead of electrically as described.
