Abstract

1,217,238. Textured yarn; process. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 12 March, 1968 [15 March, 1967; 27 March, 1967 (5); 18 April, 1967; 18 Mal, 1967 (2), 24 May, 1967], No. 12037/68. Headings D1F and D1W. A yarn comprises a core component of crimped filaments or fibres fused at random along the length of the yarn, and a sheath component surrounding the core of highly crimped filaments, the core component comprising filaments or fibres which fuse below the temperature at which the filaments in the sheath fuse. A method of preparing the yarn comprises combining a yarn for forming the core and a yarn for forming the sheath, twisting the resultant yarn, heating to a temperature above that where the filaments or fibres of the core fuse and below that where the filaments of the sheath fuse, and untwisting. The core and sheath preferably comprise thermoplastic filaments or fibres of a different chemical constitution. In an alternative embodiment, the sheath and core comprise thermoplastic filaments or fibres of the same chemical constitution but having different melting points. The filaments may have a polygonal profiled cross-section, and may comprise a composite filament, the two components having different melting points. The finished yarn is preferably a relaxed yarn. In a preferred embodiment of the process, two thermoplastic multifilament yams 1, 2 are supplied from bobbins 3, 4 and are doubled at yarn, guide 7 after suitable tensioning at rollers 5, 6. The doubled yarn passes over heater 14 and through false-twister 8, the textured yarn being wound up via take-up rolls 9a, 9b and guide rod 10. Several examples of suitable combinations of thermoplastic materials are given in the text of the Specification.
