Abstract

A flexible mirror 3 is placed in the path of the light beam emitted by a headlamp 2 and an actuator 4 is provided to change the curvature of the mirror and vary the shape of the reflected beam. The headlamp beam is directed normally to the longitudinal axis A of the vehicle and the mirror which has a backing of flexible plastics or metal, is plane in its unstressed state and is positioned at 45 degrees to the axis A. The actuator, which may be operated electrically, hydraulically or mechanically and may be controlled by the speed or steering movements of the vehicle or directly by the driver, acts on one end 5a of a lever 5 which is pivoted at 6 and carries at its other end a roller 7 adapted to roll along the back of the mirror and flex a zone 3a thereof, the remainder of the mirror staying flat. The mirror as a whole may be pivoted or flexed about a horizontal axis to obtain a dipped beam.
