Vacuum cleaning-apparatus.-In a vacuum cleaner of the kind having a dustloosening rotary brush mounted in the suction nozzle, and driven by gearing mounted in a running wheel, the brush is secured to an end or stub shaft driven from a running wheel loose on the shaft through transmission gearing comprising an external gear wheel on the shaft, a number of pinions, and an internal gear wheel in the running wheel; the end shafts of the brush are mounted in bearings in adjustable eccentrics. The suction nozzle 1, Fig. II., communicates by a passage 5 with a chamber 2 containing a fan 3 driven by a motor (not shown) on the wall 4 and having a discharge passage 6 leading to a dustcollector, a handle nail 11 being connected to the sides of the chamber 2. The nozzle is supported above the surface to be cleaned by a rear castor on a bracket 10 and by wheels 8, 9, Figs. IV. and VIII., loosely mounted on the end shafts 16, 27 of the brush 12. The shafts 16, 27 are supported in bearings in eccentrics 13, 14 loosely mounted in the end walls of the nozzle 1 and secured by screws to the ends of a bail handle 15, which extends across the top of the nozzle and is held in its adjusted position by engagement with a notched plate 28 of varying radius. The brush 12 and wheel 9 are loose on the shaft 27, and the brush is secured by a pin 20 to the enlarged part 19 of the shaft 16 on which the running wheel 8 is loosely mounted. The wheel is made in two parts 17, 18 riveted together and has its outer face closed by a cover 21 secured by a pin 26, Fig. V., to the eccentric 13. An internal toothed wheel 24 on the part 18 gears with pinions 23 on studs 22 set in the cover 21, and these pinions gear with a toothed wheel 25 keyed to the shaft 16, which is thereby driven to rotate the brush as the wheel 8 is rotated bv contact with the surface cleaned. The peripheries of the wheels 8, 9 have friction treads.
