CARPET-BEATER.

V `for driving the beater, fourth, to provide a simple and eiiicient carpet beater.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides inthe combination and arrangement of4 parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in theprecise embodiment of the invention herein. disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing fron the s irit of the invention.

The element forming Jdie lsubject of the present invention consists of a movable support, such as the shaft 1 on which disks 2 are secured. Each disk is provided with a series ofapertures, two being shown in the present instance. Bail `like members 4 are provided and each has its ends bent, as at 5,
' to take into the apertures 3 and pivotally attach the bail to thevdisks. Sheaves 6 may be :secured to the shaft'l to form a means for belting the shaft to a suitable source of power.

The beater turns Withina \cylindrical chamber 15, formed in the casing 7." The chamber 15 is provided at its under side with a longitudinal opening 16 through which the bails 4 are adapted to project.
A dust receiving bag 17 is positioned with I itsmouth encircling the discharge port 12 and its bottom may be secured to the handle 8, as shown.
. It is, of course, understood that any motivepower may be'emplo'yed to drive this device, and the device may be attached to cleaners or sweepers of varying form and design. l
In practice the device is used as follows:
The vacuum cleaner is operated in the usual way. The shaft 1 will be driven by the belt 14 causing the hails 4 to be thrown violently against the carpet and 4beat the same, loosening the dust and dirt, which will then be free to be sucked up by the current of air created bv the revolving fan.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new and desire. to secure by Letters-Patent isz- A carpet beater embodying a movable support, a shaft journaled in the support, disks rigid on the shaft and having spaced apertures, bail-like members having bent ends pivotally engaging the apertures secured to the disks, and means for revolving the shaft.
