Abstract

1,216,789. Reclaiming foamed thermoplastic selvage. T. W. WINSTEAD. 28 April, 1969, No. 21587/69. Heading B5A In a method where articles 5 are moulded from a foamed thermoplastic web 2, e.g. a foamed polystyrene web, the selvage 4a resulting from the cutting out of the articles by means of cutting roller 6 is densified and then passed to a granulator 11. As shown, the extrudate is passed immediately to moulding apparatus 3, which forms articles 5 by a vacuum or blowforming process, and the selvage is densified between rollers 7 and 9 or rollers 10. In mixer 13, virgin extrusion pellets are added to the granulate and the mixture is passed to extruder 1, the granulate forming 25-50% or more by weight of the mixture. Preferably the temperature of the selvage is reduced to below the boiling point of the blowing agent used, prior to densification. The forming of web 2 and the production of articles 5 may form a two-stage process. The invention may be applied to the single-stage article-forming process described in Specification 1,159,562.
