The invention comprises fluorinated aromatic polyesters containing a repeating unit of the formula where A and B, which are the same or different, are each a divalent organic group which may be a polyfluoroalkylene group, an arylene group linked directly to the ester oxygen atoms, or may contain two arylene groups linked directly or through an alkylene group, a polyfluoroalkylene group or an ether linkage and each linked directly to the ester oxygen atoms, and in which at least one of A or B contains in the polymer chain, a perfluoroalkylene group of the formula -(-CF 2 -)- n , where n is an integer, preferably from 1 to 7. Preferred polyesters contain the repeating units, where A is as defined but preferably where m and n are the same or different integers, preferably 1 to 7, or, where B is as defined, but preferably where n and p are the same or different integers, preferably 1 to 7. The polyesters are made by a process in which a diol component HO-A-OH is reacted, e.g. by melt polymerization at 80- 250‹ C., with an acid component X.CO.B.CO.X, where A and B are as defined above at least one containing in its chain, a perfluoroalkylene group -(-CF 2 -)- n , and X is Cl, Br, OH, alkoxy or aryloxy. In the examples, polyesters were made from (1) 1,3-di-(3-chlorocarbonylphenyl) hexafluoropropane and 2,2,3,3,4,4 - hexafluoropropane, (2) 1,3 - di - (3 - chlorocarbonylphenyl) hexafluoropropane, 1,3 - di - (4 - chlorocarbonylphenyl) hexafluoropropane and 2,2, 3,3,4,4 - hexafluoropentane - 1,5 - diol, (3) 1,3- di - (3 - hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane and 1,3 - di - (3 - chlorocarbonylphenyl) hexafluoropropane, (4) 1,3 - di - (3 - chlorocarbonylphenyl) hexafluoropropane and 1,3 - di - (3 - hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane, (5) 2,2 - bis - (4- hydroxyphenyl) propane and 1,3 - di -) 3- chlorocarbonylphenyl) hexafluoropropane and (6) 1,5 - di - (3 - chlorocarbonylphenyl) - 2,2, 3,3,4,4-hexafluoropentane.
