Abstract

1,216,501. Valves. W. KOHRING. 12 July, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17287/67. Heading F2V. A valve comprises a flexible tubular membrane 12 providing a flow passage therethrough, a pair of support members 18 on opposite sides of the membrane and each comprising a number of cylinders 22 ... 26 journalled one within the other, each of the cylinders being arranged so that normally its cylindrical surface intersects the undeformed position of the membrane to deform it towards the other side of the membrane and having a portion cut away to define a recess 33 which, in the open position of the valve, accommodates the undeformed membrane, and means 34, 35 for rotating the cylinders of each support member sequentially starting with the inner cylinder to move the cylinders between the open position in which all the recesses 33 of each support member are in register to accommodate the undeformed membrane and the closed position in which the cylindrical surface of the outer cylinder 26 of each support member deforms and supports the membrane. Each recess 33 has a radius and axis corresponding to the radius and axis of the membrane while the means 34, 35 consist of semicircular grooves and projection providing lost-motion coupling between the cylinders of each support member. Two gear-wheels 31 interconnect the support members and rubber inserts in the cylinders 26 engage the membrane in the closed position to accommodate granules which may be present in the fluid controlled by the valve. In a modification, only four cylinders are included in each support member which is mounted in in needle bearings, spring steel rubbing strips are bonded to the ouside of the membrane, and the gear-wheels are coupled to a hand wheel. Small vents at each side of the valve body ensure there is no build-up of pressure when the support members are rotated.
