Abstract

1,216,471. Treatment of TiO 2 . LAPORTE TITANIUM Ltd. 24 Jan., 1968 [26 Jan., 1967], No. 3958/67. Heading ClN. TiO 2 pigment containing Al 2 O 3 is formed into an aqueous slurry containing at least 30% by wt. H 2 0 and having a pH not above 5, and after aging a phosphorus compound is added as dispersing agent, preferably after at least 24 hrs., e.g. up to 240 hrs. The TiO 2 may contain 0À25-5% Al 2 O 3 , at least part of which should be acid soluble, i.e. dissolve if boiled with 6N HCl. The TiO 2 may be formed by vapour phase oxidation of TiCi 4 , the A1 2 0 3 being formed simultaneously by oxidation of AlCl 3 or Al; or by hydrolysis of aqueous Ti sulphate, an Al compound being added prior to calcination. The pH of the slurry may be reduced by adding HC1, TiCI 4 , AlCl 3 , or TICi 4 + AlCl 3 . The P compound may be Na hexameta- or pyrophosphate, tri, di, or mono Na phosphate, phosphate esters, or a salt of an acylation product of phosphorous acid, and may be added in amount of 0À05-1À5% by weight of pigment. An alkali, e.g. NaOH, may also be added to bring the pH of the dispersion to 9-12. The dispersion may then be classified, surface treated by coating with hydrous oxides of Si, Ti, Zr, Ce, or Al (e.g. by adding solutions of TiCi 4 and Na aluminate) or with metal phosphates or by contacting with organic materials, flocculated, filtered, washed, dried, and fluid energy milled.
